The city of Hartford is poised to become a leader in one of the most sustainable kinds of office environments: coworking. Coworking spaces are communal settings where freelancers, telecommuters, and other independent professionals can find an office “home,” through memberships or temporary passes.
These spaces are inherently sustainable – sharing instead of duplicating resources, decreasing travel time, and increasing exposure to diverse ideas and perspectives. Workers and employers are finding that these shared working spaces are cost-effective, flexible, and good for productivity. They also reduce the sometimes negative internal politics of the traditional office. And perhaps surprisingly, they tend to strengthen the meaningfulness of one’s occupation, because working among people doing different kinds of work can make own working identity stronger.
The trend in working remotely is growing quickly. About a third of major business leaders have said that more than half of their company’s full time work force could be working remotely by 2020. A generational shift in the work force will hasten this trend. A robust 68% of job seekers who identify as “Millennials” said an option to work remotely would greatly increase their interest in specific employers.
