Successes

  • Robust Community Organizations: Groups like KNOX, Keney Park Sustainability Project, End Hunger CT, Foodshare, and Hartford Food System work to improve food production and distribution in Hartford.
  • Eight Farmers’ Markets:  Local farmers bring healthy, local food to Hartford, with one market (Billings Forge) open year-round.
  • Community Gardens & Urban Farms: Hartford has at least 24 community gardens and urban farms that serve over 350 local families.
  • New Zoning Encourages Urban Agriculture: Hartford’s award-winning 2016 zoning code authorizes community gardens, honey bee keeping, henhouses, and farmers’ markets in all zones.
  • School-Based Programs:  Half of Hartford public schools educate students about food and have a garden on school property.
  • Well-Established Food Advisory Commission on Food Policy:  One of the oldest such commissions in the country, Hartford’s ACFP has made recommendations on issues as diverse as wasted food, community gardens, zoning regulations, and farmers’ markets.
